WHO WE ARE

The NHS Biomedical Engineering Club Initiative is a student-led organization that was started by Keerthana Danasekaran & Disha Iyengar at Northville High School in Northville, MI. Keerthana and Disha decided to start this organization after their volunteer experiences during their freshman years. When volunteering at a local hospital in Puducherry, India, Keerthana came across many pregnant women who experienced complications during their pregnancy due to severe cases of anemia. Additionally, Disha's exposure to bioengineering research and several subsequent research endeavors inspired her to delve deeper into biomedical engineering (BME). Inspired by these experiences, Keerthana and Disha wanted to combine their interests and continue educating students about  health disparities and the rapidly evolving field of BME. When fighting for a change as serious as healthcare equality, it is important to educate our fellow peers so they are familiar with these issues.

To date, Keerthana and Disha have garnered a passionate group of 30+ members to advocate for healthcare equality and help fundraise for CardioStart International, a nonprofit organization that provides medical equipment and aid for places in need. By doing so, we are working towards creating a better tomorrow for our future generations.

WHAT WE DO

As we mentioned before, the NHS Biomedical Engineering Initiative is a fundraising organization, so one of our primary goals is to fundraise for CardioStart International, an nonprofit that works to further improve the scope of biomedical engineering in our working society and to provide medical assistance to areas in which healthcare is not easily accessible. We have raised over $1500 dollars for this organization by hosting bake sales, conducting our annual Bioengineering Summer Camps, and by getting sponsorships from local businesses. Our main sponsor is Genitti's Hole in the Wall, a local restaurant business in Downtown Northville.

We have also partnered with the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) to provide our students with resources, information, and activities from the BMES student chapters. By subscribing to this membership, we provide students in our club with networking opportunities with real professionals in the Biomedical Engineering Field.

Most importantly, the NHS Biomedical Engineering Initiative hosts bimonthly club meetings to talk about health disparities occurring in underprivileged countries and to engage in fun team building activities. In the past, we've created DIY prosthetics, engaged in debates about Embryonic STEM Cell usage for research, and assembled licorice-marshmallow DNA models!
